In 2002, the South Dakota Center for Nursing Workforce (CNW) was established to address nursing workforce supply, demand, recruitment, retention, educational preparation, and utilization of nurses. The CNW partners with stakeholders to promote strategies to address the nursing workforce and strives to ensure access to the most recent nursing data from across the state to provide a clear picture of South Dakota's nursing workforce.

The CNW associated laws are SDCL 36-9-95 and 36-9-96
