Initial Registration Requirements and Steps

Instructors: a student does not need to be pre-approved by the Board before starting a training program.

Steps to become a Registered CNA

1. A nurse Aide student must complete the Board's Online Application.
2. To be eligible to register as a Nurse Aide, a student must have completed a 75-hour Board-approved nurse aide training program (NATP) and the Skills Evaluation.
  • Students who have not completed the training may reivew the Board's list of South Dakota's approved Nurse Aide Training Programs, and should contact the approved program to ask about enrollment options. Students who are employed by a nursing facility cannot be charged a fee for nurse aide training or testing.
3. After completing a NATP and Skills Evaluation, the Program Director or Primary Instructor must send to the Board the student's four Skills Evaluation Forms.
  • The NATP Completion Verification Form is no longer required, instructors verify NATP completion in TMU.
4. After steps 1, 2, and 3 are completed, the NATP instructor will register the student to take the Board's approved CNA Knowledge Exam through Headmaster's SD TMU website.
  • Visit SD TMU Resources for "how to" guides for instructors and students
  • Headmaster will notify the Board of the student's exam results. A passing score of 75% is required, a student may retake the exam two times; additional training is needed after 3 attempts.
5. Upon passing the Knowledge Exam, and if all other registration requirements are met, the Board will add the applicant (student) to the CNA registry.
6.  The student and employer may verify registration status on the Board's CNA Verification website.

Registration is valid for 2 years. Review renewal criteria to ensure eligibility to meet renewal qualifications.
