Initial Registration Steps, Skills Evaluation, Knowledge Exam
CNAs are valuable members of nursing teams in skilled nursing facilities (NF) and assisted living facilities; they assist licensed RNs and LPNs by providing essential delegated nursing care tasks.
Only persons who are actively registered with the Board may use the title of “Certified Nurse Aide” and the abbreviation “CNA”.
Instructors: a student does not need to be pre-approved by the Board before starting a training program.
CNA Registration Steps
1. A nurse aide student must complete the Board's Online Application
2. A nurse aide student must complete a 75-hour Board-Approved Nurse Aide Training Program

3. After completing the training program, the Program Director or Primary Instructor must submit to the Board the NATP Completion Verification Form and the four Skills Evaluation Forms
4. After steps 1, 2, and 3 are completed, the student must register to take the Board's approved CNA Knowledge Exam; a passing score of 75% is required
- A passing score of 75% is required. A student may retake the exam two times (additional training is needed after 3 attempts).
- Register through SDHCA
- Headmaster, the Board's approved test vendor, will notify the Board of the results of the exam.
5. Upon passing the Knowledge Exam, and if all other registration requirements are met, the Board will add the applicant (student) to the CNA registry.
6. Verify CNA registration on the Board's website: Verify
The Application Status on the Verification website only shows that a student applied to the Board for registration.
