New APRN License Application
To practice as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in SD in the role of a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) you must possess a license or a temporary permit issued by the South Dakota Board of Nursing.
A license or temporary permit is required before you can begin orientation at your place of employment.

Keep in mind:
- You must hold an active South Dakota RN license or a multistate compact RN license for APRN licensure. If needed, the South Dakota RN application may be accessed in the Nurse Portal.
- Plan on 4 – 6 weeks for all required forms to be received and reviewed by the Board for approval of an RN or APRN license.
- You may track your application status in your Nurse Portal account.
