Student Nurses & Inactive Nurses

A nursing student, or a nurse who is no longer actively licensed, may apply to request an equivalency waiver to opt out of the 75-hour nurse aide training program (NATP).

Equivalency Requirements: 

  • Must have completed fundamentals in nursing courses at an approved nursing education program with a grade C or better.
    • copy of the nursing school transcript must be submitted.
    • A nursing school faculty member must attest that the student has met the fundamentals classroom and skills demonstration portions that are equivalent to a NATP and the student is appropriate for a waiver.
  • Or, must provide RN/LPN license number and state/jurisdiction of that license.
    • The Director of Nursing or NATP Program Director must attest that the inactive nurse is appropriate for a waiver.

Waiver Application

  • Upon receipt and approval by the Board, all applicants must pass the SDBON Competency Evaluation CNA written exam before being placed on the CNA registry.
The waiver only applies to nursing students and inactive nurses.
