Initial Registration Requirements and Steps

Instructors: a student does not need to be pre-approved by the Board before starting a training program. 

Steps to become a Registered CNA 

1. Nurse Aide student must complete the Board's Online Application.

2. Nurse Aide student must complete a 75-hour Board-approved nurse aide training program (NATP) including a Skills Evaluation.

3. After completing the NATP and Skills Evaluation, the Program Director or Primary Instructor must send to the Board the student's four Skills Evaluation Forms

  • The NATP Completion Verification Form is no longer required, instructors verify NATP completion in TMU.

4. After steps 1, 2, and 3 are completed, the NATP instructor will register the student to take the Board's approved CNA Knowledge Exam through Headmaster's SD TMU website.

  • Headmaster will notify the Board of the student's exam results. A passing score of 75% is required, a student may retake the exam two times; additional training is needed after 3 attempts.  

5. Upon passing the Knowledge Exam, and if all other registration requirements are met, the Board will add the applicant (student) to the CNA registry.

6.  The student and employer may verify registration status on the Board's CNA Verification website.

Registration is valid for 2 years. Review renewal criteria to ensure eligibility to meet renewal qualifications.
