New LPN/RN License Application

Only applicants who have completed a nursing program approved by a state board of nursing are eligible to be issued a South Dakota nursing license or to be made eligible to sit for the national nurse licensing exam. Applications for licensure must be accompanied with the required fee and fees are non-refundable.

To apply for a new LPN or RN license, create a Nurse Portal account to access the online application for licensure by NCLEX examination or by endorsement from another state.

  • Track the status of your application in your Nurse Portal account!

Be Advised:

  • NCLEX results will not be given in an email or over the phone by Board staff.

  • You may obtain unofficial NCLEX results within two business days after taking the exam through Pearson Vue's Quick Results Service; there is a fee for this service. Keep in mind, unofficial results do not authorize an applicant to practice as an RN or LPN.

  • After the Board receives your official results, your new license will typically be issued by 5:00 pm the next business day. You can verify the license on the Board's Verification website. If you passed, the verification website will show an active license. You will also recieve a packet in the mail with the license.

  • If you failed the exam, the verification website will not return any search results. The applicant will receive, in 5-7 business days, a letter with instructions on retaking the exam and a Candidate Performance Report.

An application is null one year ater received at the Board office. Fees are non-refundable.
