New & Updated Rules on LPN and RN Practice 

Following a public hearing on October 10, 2023, the Board adopted amendments to rules in Chapter 20:48:01 and Chapter 20:48:04. Changes are anticipated to become effective in early December 2023. Revisions to existing rules and new rules were added that modernize the RN and LPN scope and standards of practice to be consistent with national standards of practice and with the RN scope of practice statute: SDCL 36-9-3, and the LPN scope of practice statute: 36-9-4.

Updated Rules on Medication Aides & Diabetes Aides

Following a public hearing the Board adopted amendments to rules in Chapter 20:48:01; Chapter 20:48:04.01; and Chapter 20:48:16.  Changes became effective on November 27, 2022. Changes included revising and updating rules on the delegation of medication administration tasks to nursing assistive personnel, including training and supervision requirements; removed the registration requirement for diabetes aides to be listed on the SDBON unlicensed personnel registry; removed the requirement for all medication aides to be registered by the board; as of November 27, 2022 only medication aides employed in skilled nursing facilities (SNF), assisted living centers (ALC), and hospitals are registered with the board.

Updated Rules on Dialysis Technicians

Following a public hearing the Board adopted amendments to ARSD 20:48:04:02.04, Chapters 20:48:04.02 and 20:48:16. Changes became effective July 6, 2022 and included updating training requirements and delegation of nursing tasks to dialysis technicians; adding rules to allow RNs to delegate central line dialysis tasks to a dialysis technician including training and supervision requirements; and amending Chapter 20:48:16 to remove registration requirements for dialysis technicians by the board.
